The 1980 U.S. Men's Ice Hockey Team and Their Miracle on Ice 7

We have seen many memorable moments in the winter months Olympics history, but none of them as emotional given that the miracle on ice that occurred during the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid, The big apple. The states hockey team won the gold medal that year beating out of the heavy favorite Soviet team considered one of the best ice hockey team worldwide back then. The U.S. men鈥檚 ice hockey team was mostly derived from collegiate players and never likely advance beyond group play. The Ussr on the flip side, had won the ice hockey gold medal in 1956 as well as every year since 1964. Although they were classified as amateur players, the Soviet government allowed them to play professionally in the well-developed league with top class training facilities. Their Olympic squad consisted of legendary players in world ice hockey combined with talented young players. The rivalry between U.S. and Soviet team only mirrored the political and military tension that existed when between this pair of countries a result of Cold War. Within Olympic group play, the Americans surprised everyone by advancing towards medal round by earning a 2-2 draw versus the favored Swedish team, beating out Czechoslovakia, Norway, Romania, and West Germany. From the other group, the Soviets pounced on the opposition knocking off Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, Finland, and Canada, qualifying easily in to the next round. Using the media yesterday the match, unless magic happened, the Russians were anticipated to win the Olympic gold medal all over again. The Soviet coach prepared his players for those medal round by resting many of his best players and allowing them to study plays and not practice relating to the ice. The American coach, Herb Brooks, was tougher on his players continuing hard practices and not simply letting on drills. When in front of a packed home crowd audience waving American flags, the initial period ended together with the game tied 2-2. The Soviets dominated play in the second, outshooting the Americans 12-2, but only managed to score one goal leading 3-2 after two periods. Both teams changed over their aggressiveness within the third period as Mark Johnson fired the puck into your net tying the adventure 3-3. Mike Eruzione鈥檚 goal with Ten minutes left gave Team USA a 4-3 lead. The Soviets were in panic mode, attacking furiously and shooting wildly. Struggles to score against goalie Jim Craig, contributions ticked down to the last seconds, sending the U.S. players running in your ice celebrating their incredible victory. Team USA happened to win the gold medal as long as they defeated Finland in their last match. The Soviets settled for your silver medal once they beat Sweden within their final game. In 1999, Sports Illustrated named the 鈥淢iracle on Ice鈥?some of the best Sports Moment of your 20th Century. Belonging to the 20 players on Team USA, 13 proceeded to use inside NHL.
